Sports cars, reputed for being energy guzzlers, are now trying to boost their green credentials as they seek to attract environmentally conscious consumers and meet new climate standards.

At the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari conscientiously draped signs on its new models saying that the vehicles’ carbon emissions have been cut by 30 per cent.

The F12 Berlinetta, a 12-cylinder car with 740 horsepower, is equipped with a system that automatically halts its engine at red lights or in traffic jams, thereby saving some fuel.

The brand is also developing a hybrid model, the F599 HY-Kers, although it is still a prototype at the moment.

If sports-car makers are making this effort to go green, it is partly because they are driven by new and tougher environmental standards in Europe. Some firms are also pushed by consumer demand to develop greener sports cars.

Gotta love 53-year-old Momir Bojic, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, has recently showed-off his unique Volkswagen Beetle, made almost entirely from wood. Momir built his wooden Beetle six years ago, as a hobby, and says it took him an entire year to complete the job. At first glance, it looks like a 1:1 scale replica of Volkswagen iconic buggy, but this is a real drivable vehicle. It has a full wooden body, wooden steering wheel, hub caps and dashboard.

Twenty-six nations are expected to lodge a formal protest on Wednesday against a European Union law to make airlines pay for carbon emissions — adding to transatlantic tension on an issue that has triggered a tit-for-tat bill in the U.S. Congress.

Under EU legislation, from January 1 all flights to or from Europe will have to buy carbon permits to help offset their emissions under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) — the 27 member bloc’s prime tool for trying to curb the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

Last week, in the U.S. Congress, where environmental issues have become a flashpoint between Republicans and President Barack Obama’s Democrats, the lower house passed a bill making it illegal for airlines to comply with the EU’s law.

As you might have heard, everything in Texas is big! When we think of Texas, we think of many things: open roads, desert landscapes, Beyoncé. And of course, we also think of oil, since Texas is one of the country’s largest producers of the stuff.

So it might seem a little strange to learn that Houston, Texas is now home to North America’s largest car-charging site. But then, truth is always stranger than fiction.

The site is Houston’s Tranquility Park Garage, which has been tricked out with 28 charging stations from GRIDbot, a manufacturer based in Austin. These stations will charge the city’s existing Prius plug-in hybrids and its new fleet of fully electric vehicles.

British Airways became the first company to support a major new initiative designed to make it easier for UK firms to invest in domestic emission reduction projects.

The UK Carbon Reporting Framework has been developed by BA, Deloitte, environmental consultancy BRE and think-tank Forum for the Future as a way to ensure that British emission reduction projects comply with agreed standards.

The group is inviting a wide range of UK emission reduction projects, such as community-owned renewable energy installations, energy efficient refurbishment programmes for social housing and tree planting schemes, to apply for inclusion in the framework, potentially providing access to corporate funds.

China, Germany and the UK have the most stable and consistent clean energy policies, a boon for investors seeking jurisdictions with the least amount of uncertainty, according to a report by Deutsche Bank Climate Change Advisors.

The three countries rank best-in-class in terms of the transparency, longevity and certainty of their climate policies, according to the consulting firm’s global climate change policy tracker. All three countries have favourable and consistent policies to control emissions, such as binding or accountable emissions targets, renewable electricity standards and long-term energy efficiency plans. They also have strong financial support mechanisms such as feed-in tariffs and green banks to facilitate funding for clean energy projects.
